CUBE LTD Comp 2011 Mountain Bike Review

CUBE LTD Comp 2011 White-Metal-Red

It isn’t big surprise or secret, for that matter, that the big bike guys in UK cycle industry (understand Giant, Specialized and Trek) have been scratching their heads since Cube bikes came to UK. The reason for their worry is most visible in the mid-range level hard-tail mountain bike category. The Cubes are something different and rather good looking, the their bikes are very well equipped and extremely well finished but very reasonably priced. Have you too noticed the ‘The Demo Series‘ lurking on you from any mountain bike magazine at the minute? Quite something – Giant, Specialized and Trek. The forever UK rivals are joining forces? Has this bizarre idea crossed you mind already? If not, I’ll tell you why they doing this – they are afraid, afraid of CUBE mountain bikes.

And to give you the prime example of this I decided to review the Cube LTD Comp, 2011 model. Available in two finishes – anodized black and rather sexy looking white/metal/red. The anodized option is 200g lighter, but not as flash looking as the painted one. The spec is quite something considering the price tag (RRP £819) – Shimano SLX 3×10 speed  transmission with XT rear derailleur, Rock Shox Tora fork with PopLoc, Shimano M445 hydraulic brakes, Easton and Scape finishing kit and Schwalbe custom colored rubber. (For full specification check full detailed spec below)
All this weighting only 12.7 (anodized)/12.9 kg (painted) for just over 800 pounds – fantastic!

CUBE LTD Comp 2011 Anodized Black

It is a ‘no-brainer’. Just go and compare it to £800 ‘Spesh‘ or Giant ore Trek if you like, the brand to known to British cycling public as a good bikes for your money, they are struggling this year, they are no where near to meet this high standard Cube bikes are setting up. Cube two steps forward, ‘established’ UK brands two steps back.

So if you weekend warrior or just keen cyclist who would like to upgrade from your 10 year old Specialized, Trek or Marin and you have been planing to spend no more then grand  mark don’t look anywhere else, or look wherever you want, but I know you be back for Cube LTD Comp :)

Here is verdict from June’s 2011 issue of MBR magazine:

” Last year, Cube’s entry-level hard-tail fell at the fundamental fork hurdle. Stepping up with couple of hundred quid (and a bit) the LTD Comp bypassed this blip, and brings with it a thoughtfully constructed and flamboyantly finished frame. Adoring it is one of, if not the most competitive component packages in the £800 bracket. A cracking fork with smart on-the-fly adjustment is some feat at this price point. Ever pedantic though, we’d prefer to see a shorter stem as standard, but this is probably the only significant point to let the Cube LTD Comp down” 9 out of 10 !!!

And not to forget, the no. 1 shop where to get Cube bikes is definitely Chain Reaction Cycles, the biggest online cycle retailer in Europe, sold secure, service second to none and free delivery world wide plus 12 month no hassle return policy! So please check out their site for latest pricing and availability of the Cube bikes, just click on the link here or the banner below.

Alu Superlite:
Extremely high tensile strength 7005 aluminium alloy requires heat treatment. Its developed for the highest requirements, very stiff and fatigue resistant, corrosion resistant, nonshearing; double butted which makes it suitable for very light tube-sets with a high level of stiffness.
RFR Geometry:
Our bicycles with RFR-geometry stand out by their sports character. The riding characteristics, rider comfort and rider safety in particular are taken in account for each individual bike category.
FSS Frame Save System:
To protect our high-end aluminium frames, they are built with the CUBE Frame Save System replaceable derailleur hanger. The thread is in the hanger and not in the frame as usual. In case of a crash, this hanger can be easily and quickly replaced by a new one.
One Piece Design:
Joints in high-quality aluminium frames are specially finished via this method and so create the impression of seamless tube design. This generates the visual effect of molding and ensures high load-bearing capacity.
